The 1841 census for the parish of All Saints in Newcastle on Tyne, England, recorded a household living at Lime Street whose head was Barnerd Quigley. Living in the household were what appears to be (1841 census is not explicit about relationships) Barnerd's wife Ann, their three children, and another man, Willm Quigley. The youngest child listed, Thomas Quigley, was recorded as aged 5 years and as having been born in Scotland.

In 1851 the UK census for Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, recorded Barnard Quigley as head of a household living in Gardner's Buildings. With Barnard lived his son Thomas, aged 15 years. Thomas had been born, according to this census entry, in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, and was an apprentice to a moulder.

The 1881 census for St Stephen's parish in South Shields, Northumberland, England, recorded Thomas as head of a small household living at 74 Wapping Street. He was widower, aged 41 years, and worked as a labourer in a ship yard. With him lived two sons, Thomas, a shop boy aged 14 years and Michael aged 7 years, a grandson, George R. Hedley, aged 5 years, and a lodger, Sarah McVay, a washerwoman aged 40 years.

In 1891 Thomas Quigley was recorded as an inmate of the Royal Infirmary in Newcastle Upon Tyne. ^{3 4 5}
