ROBSON, Charles ^{1 2}

   Cause of his death was syncope from natural causes.³

   Other names for Charles were MOUNT, Charles ^{3 4 5 6 7} and ROBERTSON, Charles.¹

  General Notes:

Charles was married under the name of Charles Robson in 1864. Later his surname was recorded as Robertson and Mount in the birth certificates of his children by his wife Ann or Annie Smith. There is a certain amount of mystery or disinformation about his name and the names of his parents, which may or may not indicate an attempt to disguise the circumstances of his birth. It's possible that the names reported by him, if not his actual biological parents, were the people who cared for him, relatives perhaps.

In 1871 Charles and Ann Mount and their two sons Robert and Charles were recorded living in Baird's Square, Holytown in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire. Charles was a coal miner, aged 28 years and born in Airdrie. His wife was 26 years old and born in the same place. Their sons were 3 years old, and 11 months, respectively, and both had been born in Bothwell parish.

In 1872 Charles Mount coal miner was recorded as father of Annie Robison Mount. His wife Annie Mount was the informant of the birth and made her X mark. The parents' marriage was recorded as 25th [sic] April 1864 at Holytown.

Charles was a coal miner according to his daughter Jane's birth certificate in 1877, her marriage certificate of 1900 (where she was named Jeane) and her marriage certificate of 1917 (where she was named Jeanie). It was he who was the informant of Jane's birth.

The 1881 census for Dalserf Parish, Lanarkshire, recorded the Mount family living in Red Row. Charles and Ann Mount were recorded along with their four daughters and one son. Charles Mount was a coal miner of 40 years of age, and had been born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. His children ranged from 1 to 10 years of age.

Charles Mount was recorded as a coal miner in 1891 in the marriage certificate of his son Robert.

Charles Mount, widower, who was present where his wife's death occurred, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Larkhall on 13 January 1905.

Chrales Mount was found dead about 8.00 am on 3 March 1912 at 3 Wylie Street Hamilton. He was the widower of Annie Smith and was recorded as 70 years old in his death certificate. ^{1 6 7 8 9}

J. Murray Young MB CM, who saw and examined the body, certified the cause of death. Robert Mount of 213 Airbles Road Motherwell, son of the the deceased, was the informant of his father's death. ³

Charles married Ann SMITH, daughter of Robert SMITH and Jane ROBERTSON, on 26 April 1864 in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Ann SMITH was born about 1845 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{2 9} and died 12 January 1905 at 10.00 pm in Currie's Buildings, McNeill Street, Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{3 7}.). The cause of her death was cerebral apoplexy over 14 days.³

  Marriage Notes:

Charles Robson and Ann Smith married after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. They were married by John Wilkie, Minister of Holytown, and the witnesses to the marriage were Robt. Smith and Isa Wilson. The minister noted that both the two witnesses, and the bride Ann Smith, were unable to write, and that they signed with an X mark.

Charles Robson, a bachelor, was a coal miner living at Baird's Square in Bothwell parish. he was 20 years old. Both of his parents were recorded as deceased.

Ann Smith, also single, was 19 years old. and of the same address. She worked as a dyer in a cotton mill.

The marriage was registered on 29 April 1864 at Holytown.


In his daughter Jane's birth certificate the place and date of her parents' marriage was recorded as "1864 April 15th Holytown".
In the birth certificate of Annie Robson Mount the date and place were noted as "1864 April 25th Holytown".
