  General Notes:

James Quigley, along with Ann Quigley and Jane Quigley, arrived in New South Wales, Australia aboard the City of Edinburgh on 14 March 1829 from Leith and Hobart Town. It appears, from later documents, that they were siblings travelling in steerage as free passengers from Britain to Australia to meet their father, Peter Quigley, a transported convict whose sentence was near completion. Their country of origin was Ireland, and it was remarked that they were 'joining friends'.

In his entry in the New South Wales Gaol Description and Entrance Book for 1836, Sydney, James Quigley was recorded as having been a tailor by trade and a Roman Catholic by religion. He had arrived in Australia in 1829 on the vessel City of Edinburgh. He had been born in 1812. He was of slender stature, standing five feet seven and a quarter inches in height. His complexion was dark and he had black hair and black eyes. There was a scar on his left cheek. He was admitted to prison on 7 May 1836 at Sydney. He was 'disposed of' on 26 May 1836, his purpose in prison being connected to bail. 1

  Noted events in his life were:

1. Emigration, 1829, To Australia. James travelled aboard the City of Edinburgh.

2. Arrival: from Leith and Hobart Town, 14 March 1829, To Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. James Quigley arrived aboard the City of Edinburgh, the Master of which was named McKellar. He travelled steerage class. Along with Ann Quigley and Jane Quigley, all of whom were from Ireland, James Quigley was travelling to Australia 'to join his friends'.

3. Gaol Sentence, January 1836, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. James was recorded as aged 24 years when his sentence began. The gaol description and entrance book recorded him as being five feet seven and a quarter inches in height. He was of slender build with a dark complexion. He had black eyes and black hair, with a scar on his left cheek.


James married Bridget O'BRIEN 24 January 1831(permission granted). (Bridget O'BRIEN was born about 1810.)

Register of Convicts' Application to Marry

A request was made for permission to marry on the part of Bridget O'Brien and James Quigley, and this permission was granted on the 24 January 1831.

It was noted that James Quigley had come free to Australia on the vessel City of Edinburgh. Bridget O'Brien, in bond, had come to Australia to serve a seven year sentence, aboard the vessel Roslin Castle. Both parties were recorded as being 21 years of age.
