John McNarney was recorded, aged 9, by the 1861 census for Old Monkland living at 1 Clarkson's 2nd Land Coatdyke. Like his older sister Catherine he had been born in Airdrie. He was a scholar at that time.
According to the 1871 census, John and his family were then living in the parish of Gartsherrie in Old Monkland, in the hamlet of Coatdyke. Their address was 1 Clarkson's Land. Where they lived had at least one room with a window. Living there, were his father, Patrick, his mother, Catherine, his brother, Francis, and his sister, Elizabeth. Five other family groups lived at 1 Clarkson's Land, twenty six individuals in all. John was recorded as unmarried, aged 19 years, and born in New Monkland. He was a tinsmith.
In 1878 John McAnarney was one of the witnesses at the marriage of his sister Elizabeth.
John's brother, Francis, died in 1885, and John, who was present where the death occurred, was the informant of his brother's death, before the registrar at Calderbank, Andrew Baird, on 3 December 1865.
In 1887, Peter, John's son with Bridget Ryan, married at Coatbridge. In the marriage certificate John was recorded as being a soft goods dealer, and, more notably, as deceased. Why this should have been done is not known. We know that Bridget and John had no formal marriage contract. It is possible that stating that John was deceased obviated the need for Peter to produce his parents' marriage certificate.
The 1891 census recorded John McEnerney living next door to Catherine Cavanagh, nee McInairney. He was an unmarried man aged 30 years, was a tinsmith, and had been born in Airdrie. His address was noted as 31 Hall St, Dixon's Rows, Blantyre, which was a house that had two rooms with windows. He lived there with his mother, Catherine McColville [sic], aged 60 years.
It was probably John, ('J'), who signed as informant at his mother's death in 1898.
John's own death certificate of 1899 recorded him as aged 45 years at the time of death, a pauper, formerly a tinsmith, and single.
In 1900, John's son, Peter, died at the age of 35 years. In his death certificate his father was recorded as 'John McInearney general hawker deceased'. 2 3 4 6 7 8

Old Monkland Poorhouse formerly occupied the site of what is now Coathill Hospital, Coatbridge.

John Manson, Poorhouse Clerk, gave notice of John's death before the registrar at Coatbridge, James Grant, on 24 March 1899.
John married Bridget RYAN, daughter of Patrick RYAN and Mary BARR. (Bridget RYAN was born in 1840 and died 16 October 1901 at 8.00 am in Old Monkland Poorhouse, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was debility & senility over 2 months and diarrhoea for 4 days.
