There were two Duncan Quigleys born in Galston within a short time of each other. They were cousins, one the child of Thomas Quigley and Helen Barbour, the other this Duncan Quigley.

Duncan's father, Peter, signed the birth register with his X mark on 26 December 1868. Peter was recorded there as a coal miner.

Duncan Quigley was recorded as "Duncan Tweedley" in 1871 census. He was living in Galston with his family where he had been born. He was aged 2 years and the youngest named of the family then. The family of 2 adults and 6 children lived in a house with only one windowed room.
