Only Margaret's mother's name was recorded on her birth certificate. Her mother, Rose Feely, gave notice of her birth before the registrar at Hamilton, William J. T. Rae, on 26 September 1890.

A Margaret Pheely was mentioned in the 1891 census for Hamilton. She was living with her grandmother and seven other family members at 21 Castle Street. She was 6 months old and born in Hamilton.

The 1901 census recorded a Maggie Feeley living at 51 Viewpark Street, Bellshill, at the home of Walter and Ellen Maxwell (formerly Ellen Feeley), her aunt and uncle. She was a visitor and had been born in Hamilton. Two other bachelor uncles also lived there, and next door another aunt and uncle and cousin, the Quigleys.
