  General Notes:

When Sarah Adams was born in Borthwick Parish in 1855, it was her father, John Adams, who was the informant of her birth, and had been present where the birth took place. He gave notice of her birth before the registrar, Alexander Macdougall, at Borthwick on 2 February 1855.

Sarah Adams was recorded by the 1861 census for the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, living at Lauchland in Oakmuir village with her family. She was recorded as 6 years old and had been born in Borthwick, Midlothian.

In 1871 the census for Crichton, Midlothian, recorded John Adams as head of a household living at Tynebank, Turnie Dykes, with his wife and family. As well as his wife, there were six others living in the household: five were his children and the sixth was a 'relative' named Mary Adams. Sarah Adams was the eldest of the children recorded in the entry. Her birthplace was noted as Borthwick, and she was 16 years old and a scholar.

The 1881 census for the parish of Crichton, Edinburgh, recorded John Adams living as head of the household at Crichton Lime Works with his three sons, John, Isaac and William, and his daughter, Sarah. Two grandsons also lived in the household named as Robert Davidson and James A. Brown. From other sources we know that Sarah Adams was the mother of these two boys. Sarah was recorded as unmarried by the census, and aged 25 years. She is noted as a 'limeburner's daughter'. Her birthplace was Borthwick. 5

Noted events in her life were:

1. Emigration: travelling by Anglo Indian, arriving on 13 September 1883, Glasgow, Scotland To Cooktown, Australia. 1 "She came to Australia in 1883 as Sarah Adams Brown with two children Robert Davidson Brown and James Adams Brown. She married James Francis DeWeldon in 1888 and had two more children. Her parents were John and Isabella Adams."

"...they passed by Krakatoa when it erupted on the 23 August 1883."

Sarah had a relationship with Robert DAVIDSON. (Robert DAVIDSON was born about 1855.)

Sarah next married UNKNOWN. (UNKNOWN was born about 1855.)

Sarah next married James Francis DE WELDON, son of Robert DE WELDON and Catherine BANNON, on 19 April 1888 in Winton, Queensland, Australia.1 (James Francis DE WELDON was born in 1853 in Drogheda, Ireland 4 and died on 24 October 1905 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.)

  Marriage Notes:

James Francis De Weldon married Sarah Brown on 19 April 1888 at the bride's residence, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church, the officiating priest being Henry Mouton.

James was recorded as 32 years old and a baker to trade, Sarah was 30 years old. Both were resident in Winton, Queensland. He was recorded as a widower born in Drogheda, Ireland, she as a widow born in Penicuik, Scotland.

The groom's parents were noted as Robert De Weldon, a soldier, and Catherine Bannon. Sarah's parents were John Adams, a farmer, and Isabella Brown.

Both parties signed their names before two witnesses, James Burnside and Bridget Burke.

The marriage was registered 18 May 1888. 4
