Research Notes:
FATHER
As yet no Margaret Dickson has been found in the Church of Scotland baptisms registers for Haddington, for the appropriate years whose father was James Dickson, tailor in Haddington.
In the Register of Edinburgh Apprentices 1756-1800 Addenda et Corrigenda for the County of Midlothian, Scotland, there appears an entry: "Dickson (Dixon), John, s. of John, tailor at Laurencehouse, E. Lothian, to Thomas Sanderson & Co., merchants, for 5 years 26 Jun 1794" So there were Dicksons who were tailors at Laurencehouse, near Haddington. The reference to James comes from the marriage record for Margaret.
A daughter was baptised in Haddington, whose father was John, not James: Margaret Dickson Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 birth:12 April 1746 christening:16 April 1746, HADDINGTON, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND residence:1746Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland father:John Dickson mother:Isabell Johnston
If we are rigorous and accept James was Margaret's father, the most likely baptism outside of Haddington from establish church baptism registers is Margaret Dickson Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 christening:10 June 1760, GARVALD, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND father:James Dickson mother: Margaret Bertram Garvald is in East Lothian, over 35 miles from Haddington. This Margaret was the eldest of eight children of this couple, baptised between 1760 and 1774. The names of the children have no particular resonance with the names of Margaret's children.
The marriage of James, and Margaret's baptism, may well have been celebrated in a non conformist ceremony. The naming of one of Margaret's daughters 'Charlotte' may point to particular political and/or religious affiliations, or it may not. 1 4
Margaret married Thomas MOVAT elder, Cordiner, Shoemaker, son of Alexander MOWAT and Jannet BOWER, on 18 July 1778 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Thomas MOVAT elder, Cordiner, Shoemaker was born on 5 November 1726 5, baptised on 13 November 1726 in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland 5 and died before 18 July 1778.)
