Research Notes:
MARRIAGE
The Isabel Mewet who married James Cowan in 1812 is identified here as the daughter of Margaret Dickson only on the slimmest suggestion, that her daughter's name was Margaret. More research would be necessary to confirm this. It is possible that she may be the daughter of Isobell Young.
Isabel married James COWAN on 11 August 1812 in Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (James COWAN was born about 1785.)
Marriage Notes:
Old Parish Registers Haddington Parish East Lothian Marriages
"13 September 1812 Cowan | James & Isable Mewet irregularly (this word has been wrongly spelt towards the end then changed so that end letters are not clear but word is recognisable) at Edinburgh 11 August 1812"
Note: This entry is the middle one of three made between 13 September and the next normal parish entry on 11 October 1812 in the marriage register of the parish of Haddington. The three irregular marriages took place between 13 June and 31 August 1812 in parishes other than Haddington. The parish authorities kept a check on such matters, an irregular marriage being a marriage contracted outwith the forms of the Establish Church of Scotland. 1
