Note:There are two entries for this christening but the other one adds no different information.

In 1841 the census recorded James and Catherine Strachan and their four children, James, Catherine, Alexander and John, living at Garlogie Mills in the parish of Skene Aberdeenshire. James was a carpenter.

In 1851 the census for Skene Parish, Aberdeenshire, recorded James Strachan as head of a household living at Garlogie Wool Mill. He was a millwright. His age was recorded as 43 years and his birthplace as Glenbucket, Aberdeenshire. The household then consisted of nine people altogether, James, his wife and five children and two visitors, Margaret and John Deans: Margaret was a 45 year old born in Aberdeen who worked domestically, and John was a scholar, aged 10 years, also born in Aberdeen.

James Strachan was recorded as an engineer in the marriage certificate of his daughter, Catherine, in 1870.

The 1881 census for the parish of Skene in Aberdeenshire recorded James Strachan as head of a household living at no 6 Garlogie Mill Cottage. With him lived his wife, their daughter, Catherine, and their grandson, George Webster. James Strachan was recorded as 72 years of age and had been born in Glenbucket parish in Aberdeenshire. He was a mill wright by trade.

In 1891 James Strachan was head of a small household living at 7 Orchard Place in the parish of Old Machar, Aberdeen. The census of that year recorded James living with his daughter, Catherine Webster, and his grandson, George Webster. James was a retired mechanic of 83 years of age, who had been born in Glenbucket, Aberdeenshire.

When James Strachan died in 1894 his death certificate recorded him as 84 years of age. It also recorded that he was a retired mechanic at a wool mill, and the widower of Catherine Ellen Thomson Jamieson. His parents were deceased. 4 6

George Rose MB certified the cause of death.

George Webster, grandson of James Strachan and inmate, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his grandfather's death before the registrar, James Meston, at Aberdeen on 6 June 1894.


James married Catharine Helen Thomson JAMIESON, daughter of Daniel JAMESON and Rachel STRACHAN, on 29 May 1830 in Saint Nicholas parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1 2 (Catharine Helen Thomson JAMIESON was baptised on 20 November 1807 in Saint Nicholas parish, Aberdeen, Scotland 4.)
