This family were recorded in the 1851 census , under the 'Tweedlie' spelling of their name. They lived at 43 South Coburg Street in the Laurieston area near the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Each parent's age was recorded as 46 years, and the children's ages ranged from Robert who was 2 years old to Elizabeth who was 21 years old. William was recorded as a 'dairyman or cowfeeder'. He was born in Glasgow. ⁶

LAURIESTON

Laurieston, though adjacent to Gorbals parish on the south side of the river Clyde, was part of Govan parish in 1851. It had been feued and laid out as a new suburb of the city in 1801 to the west of the Gorbals at the behest of James Laurie, a merchant who had made his fortune in London.

PROOF

No hard proof has yet been found by this researcher that William is the son of Hugh Tweedlie and Elizabeth McLea, but the circumstantial evidence is convincing. The date and place of William's birth, the names of his children, the area the census records him living in, the version of the surname he uses, all these at least make it very likely he is a son of this family.

William married Margaret BRAND on 7 May 1825 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Margaret BRAND was born about 1805.)

William next married Henry McGOWAN in 1895 in Old Machar parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.² (Henry McGOWAN was born about 1800 and died before 6 Jun 1890.)
