  General Notes:

We know from the Catholic records that a son, James, was baptised in Glasgow in 1818, of Hugh Quigley and Elizabeth McLea. Hugh's occupation was given there as 'labourer'.

Elizabeth McLea was recorded variously as being married to 'Hugh' and to 'James' Tweedley.

In 1841 the census recorded a Hugh Tweedly, aged 65 years, living in Centre Street in the Tradeston district of the Gorbals. He was a labourer who had been born in Ireland. Another Hugh Tweedly, aged 25 years, and a James Tweedly aged 20 years, also resided there. Ten years later the 1851 census recorded Hugh Tweedly aged 33 years, and his wife and two children, living at 34 Centre Street in Tradeston. This suggests that Hugh and James were in fact sons of the older man, Hugh.

The 1884 death certificate of his son, James, says 'James' Tweedley senior was a 'fish merchant'. He was deceased in 1884. The information was given by Duncan, James' son. It is more than probable that when Duncan was born his grandfather was already dead and he did not know him personally, so at the time of the death of his own father, James, he may easily have confused given names at such a moment, or the individual may have had more than one given name. 6

Hugh married Elizabeth McLEA on 12 Apr 1799 in Govan parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Elizabeth McLEA was born about 1780.)

Hugh next married Hugh QUIGLEY, son of Hugh QUIGLEY and Elizabeth McLEA, on 9 Mar 1722 in Penicuik parish, Midlothian, Scotland.2 (Hugh QUIGLEY was born on 26 Aug 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland 3 and was christened on 10 Sep 1815 in St Andrew's RC Chapel, Glasgow, Scotland 3.)
