Hugh was recorded with Hugh, aged 65 years, and James, aged 20 years, living in Centre Street, in the Tradeston district of Gorbals, in the 1841 census. He was aged 25 years and was a cotton weaver by occupation. He was born in Lanarkshire.

The 1851 census recorded a Hugh Tweedly, aged 33 years, living at 34 Centre Street in Tradeston, with a wife, Janet, aged 29 years, and two daughters: Elizabeth, aged 7 years, and Janet aged 2 years. Hugh was a cotton weaver. With this small family resided Hugh's sister-in-law, Susan McDonald. 3 4
