Hugh was aged only 8 years old when he was recorded by the census of 1851. He was living south of the river Clyde in Govan parish, in the new suburb of Laurieston. He was third youngest and was recorded as being a scholar.


Hugh married Catherine VALALA, daughter of Bernard VALLALY and Elizabeth GLEN, in 1915 in 5 Greyfriars Place, Edinburgh, Scotland.2 (Catherine VALALA was christened on 27 Mar 1862 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland 3.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was enacted by declaration in the presence of Andrew Nisbet, plumber, and Minnie Graham, rubber worker. The warrant of the Sheriff Substitute of Lothian and Peebles was dated 5th January 1915.

George Nisbet was an iron moulder by trade. He was a widower aged 52 years, of 265 Gorgie Road Edinburgh.Both of his parents were deceased,

Mary Graham, MS Wilson, was a widow of 42 years, who worked as a charwoman. Her address was 7 Riego Street, Edinburgh. Both of her parents were deceased.

The marriage was registered on 5 January 1915 at Edinburgh. 2
