Richard's wife Margaret applied for poor relief in Glasgow in December 1871. In the particulars given, it was stated that Richard died four years before, i.e. in 1867. He was then aged 37 years and had been born in Belfast in Ireland. He was a bricklayer by trade and a Protestant by religion.

It did not specifically state that Richard died in Bathgate but the dates given make this likely.

Richard was described as a 'bricklayer, journeyman' in the marriage certificate of his son Richard in 1895.

When his son Richard Lyness died in Glasgow in 1942, Richard senior's occupation was noted as 'bricklayer'. 1 8 9 10 11
