William's mother Margaret applied for poor relief in Glasgow in December 1871, four years after his father died. William was aged 8 years then.

William was not mentioned in the later parts of his mother's further applications for poor relief. ^{3 4}

William married Margaret LYNESS, daughter of Richard LYNESS and Margaret CROMBIE.⁵ (Margaret LYNESS was born on 10 Jul 1857 in Calton, Glasgow, Scotland,^{2 6} died 29 December 1858 at 9.50 am in 11 Union Street, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland ^{7 8} and was buried in Calton Burial Ground, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of her death was gastric fever of short duration.
