GLEN, John 2

  • Born: 20 Jan 1873, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland 3
  • Marriage (1): McCOLE, John 1
  • Marriage (2): McENTEE, Catherine 1

  General Notes:

John Glen was recorded in 1881 by the census living in the household of Edward Vallely at 543 Dalmarnock Road Glasgow. He was recorded as the son of Edward and Jessie Vallely. However John Glen was aged 27 years and Jessie only 23 years old!

An illegitimate child called John Glen was born in Calton to Jane Glen on 1873. This may well be him. 3

John married John McCOLE.1 (John McCOLE was born about 1840 in County Donegal, Ireland.)

  Marriage Notes:

"James Gordon married twice. His first wife was Margaret Stewart (to whom he was married before 1521 and who was alive in 1541), 'Lady Eden,' daughter of Patrick Stewart of Laithers (Balbithan MS., p. 43) of the family of Stewart of Lorn and Invermeath, to which the Stewarts, Earls of Athol, and the Stewarts, Earls of Buchan also belonged."

John next married Catherine McENTEE, daughter of Patrick McENTEE and Alice MARKEY.1 (Catherine McENTEE was born about 1846 in Glasgow, Scotland and died before 31 Aug 1896.)

  Marriage Notes:

"1546-47, January 28. - John Carnegie of Kinnaird with consent of Agnes Wood, his spouse, conveyed by charter to James Gordon 'of Lesmoir' and Margaret Ogilvy, his spouse (this is first mention we have of the second wife), the lands of Erlesfield and Segeden, to them and the heirs male of their bodies : whom failing, to James Gordon of Craigtollie, and his heirs : whom failing, to Alexander Gordon of Perslie and his heirs : whom failing, to Mr. William Gordon, son of said James of Lesmoir ; whom failing, to James of Lesmoir's heirs whatsoever (Great Seal, iv., 58 : date of royal charter of confirmation, January 28, 1546-47)." (page 16)

"Lesmoir's second wife (to whom he was married by January 2, 1546) was also a widow, Margaret Ogilvy, 'Lady Gartlie' (Balbithan MS.), presumably relict of Walter Barclay of Gartly and Barclay....... The first laird of Lesmoir had, according to the Balbithan MS., six sons and three daughters by his first wife, and two sons by his second. The 1600 Gordon MS. says, however, that his first wife 'bare him six sones and fyve daughters that came to perfection,' and that the second wife 'bare to him sundry sones, qrof two came to perfection, viz., Thomas and Henrie Gordons'." (page 19)
