   Cause of his death was probably heart disease.

  General Notes:

In 1862 John's wife died at the age of 39 years. Her death certificate makes it clear that John married her when she was a widow. His occupation recorded in her death certificate was 'general merchant'.

In his son Lionel's death certificate of 1887, John was recorded as a Commission Agent. He was still alive then, though his wife was not.

In 1889 his son Leo died. John was described there as a marine insurance broker.

John died in 1891 at the recorded age of 64 years. His death certificate noted he was married to Jessie Hendry or Vipond and Barbara Liddell. Both of his parents were deceased. 6

Patrick A. Smith MB CM certified the cause of death.

William Lynass, son of the deceased, of 13 Cedar Street Glasgow, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, Dan. F. McGhee, at Glasgow on 20 July 1891, and signed the notice in a fine flowing hand. 6


John married Janet HENDRY, daughter of Alexander HENRY and Christina HASTIE, on 20 Oct 1851 in Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Janet HENDRY was born about 1823 and died 2 December 1862 at 5.05 pm in 12 York Street, Glasgow, Scotland 7.). The cause of her death was broncho-pneumonia over 1 week.


John next married Joseph McGONIGLE, son of John McGONIGLE and Margaret Ann FOWLER.2 (Joseph McGONIGLE was born about 1865 in Ireland 8 and died 1 September 1941 at 10.20 pm in 4 Bellfield Drive, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland 9.). The cause of his death was senility.


  Marriage Notes:

"He was twice married. His first wife was Mary Erskine .... George Barclay married secondly Elizabeth Wood, of Bonnington, by whom he had three sons, George, Walter and John....

Contract of Marriage betwixt the said George Barclay son and heir of the said David Barclay of Mathers and Elizabeth Wood sister-german to Patrick Wood of Bonnington whereby the said George obliges himself to cause John Barclay of Johnston his brother to renounce the said lands of Nether Weston, and the said Patrick Wood obliges himself to pay the sum of 1000 merks in the name of tocher with his said sister, which sum the said George obliges himself to employ in redeeming as many of the lands in Kirktoun of Aberluthnot as were under reversion and secure the same to the children of the marriage.

Dated 11th January 1564 and Registered penult May 1567."

John next married Barbara LIDDLE, daughter of Robert LIDDLE and Jane WIGHT, on 28 Sep 1863 in 12 York Street, Glasgow, Scotland.3 4 (Barbara LIDDLE was born on 9 Jan 1844 in Saint Cuthbert's Parish, Edinburgh, Scotland 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was conducted according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church by Fr James McIntosh. The witnesses were Thomas D. Buchanan and Archibald MacVicar.

John Lynass, the groom, was a widower of 36 years, a general merchant in trade. Barbara Little was an unmarried woman of 19 years of age. Both gave their residence as 12 York Street, Glasgow, and both signed the register.
