   Cause of his death was pneumonia over 10 days.

  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Carluke recorded Edward, his wife Isabella, and their six children, living there. Edward was a labourer in an ironstone pit. He was recorded as 41 years of age and had been born in Ireland. Indeed the whole family apart from the youngest, aged three years, were born in Ireland, suggesting that they had come to Scotland between three and four years before.

The 1861 census for Carluke recorded Edward, his wife, and their four children living there. Edward was recorded as 51 years of age.

In 1867 Edward's son, Hugh McConvil, married. In his marriage certificate Edward Convil (sic) was recorded as a collier.

Edward was an ironstone miner according to the marriage certificates of his son, James, in 1868, and his son, Edward, in 1869.

In 1871 the census for Carnwath recorded Edward living in the household of his son, John, at 161 Haywood Village. He was a widower whose age was noted as 61 years and had been born in Ireland. He worked as a railway labourer.

In 1873 Edward died. His death certificate recorded him as a coal miner and widower of Isabella Watson. His recorded age was 55 years. 1 3 4 5

LESMAHAGOW

The parish of Lesmahagow lies in the county of Lanarkshire, to the west off the M74, south of Strathaven. Turfholm is /was a village within this parish.

MARRIAGE

An Edward McConville married a woman named Eleanor Lavery in 1835 in County Down. Of this marriage a son, John, was born and baptised in 1836. A daughter, rebecca, was also born and baptised in 1839. 6 7

  Medical Notes:

J. Lindsay MD certified the cause of death.

Edward McConvill, the deceased's son who was not present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before Duncan Campbell, registrar, at Lesmahagow on 16 April 1873.
