The 1851 census for Carluke recorded Hugh as aged 4 years. He had been born in Ireland.

In 1868 a Hugh McConvill was a witness at the marriage of James McConvill in Carluke.

Hugh McConvill, his second wife, and eleven children or step children, were recorded by the 1881 census for Cambusnethan. They lived at 38 Barton Hall. Hugh was aged 36 years and had been born in Ireland. He worked as a coal miner. 2 3 4 5


Hugh married Agnes JOHNSTON, daughter of James JOHNSTON and Christina DICKSON, on 4 June 1867 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Agnes JOHNSTON was born on 3 November 1845 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 6 and died in 1875.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was father Mortimer Cassin. The witnesses were Thomas Morgan and Mary McCluskey.

Hugh McConvil made his X mark. He was aged 20 years and single, and worked as a collier. He resided at Braidwood, Carluke.

Agnes Johnston also made her mark. She was a single woman and worked as a farm servant. She was 22 years old and lived at Castlehill Carluke. Her mother was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 6 June 1867, John Fraser being the registrar. 7

Hugh next married Susan WILSON between 1875 and 1881. (Susan WILSON was born about 1843 in Ireland 4.)
