  • Born: 24 June 1827, Glanif, County Leitrim, Ireland 3
  • Marriage (1): FEELY MS UNKNOWN, , Mrs in 1847 in County Leitrim, Ireland 1
  • Marriage (2): KEENAN, Helen on 16 May 1855 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2 3
  • Died: 25 September 1893 at 11.20 am, 15 Sunnyside Rows, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Cause of his death was pneumonia over 14 days.

Another name for Terence was FEELEY, Terrance.

  General Notes:

Whe his son Hugh was born in November 1855 in the parish of Old Monkland, Terence Feely was the informant. Hugh's birth certificate of 1855 gives additional information about the parents. It recorded that Terence Feely was then aged 26 years and was a collier by occupation. He had been born in County Leitrim, Ireland. He had married in 1847 in County Leitrim and had one girl living and two girls dead of that marriage, and then married again in 1855 at Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

In 1858 Terence Feely's daughter Rosey Feely was born. In her birth certificate Terence was recorded as a coal miner. It was her father Terence, who had been present where the birth occurred, who informed the registrar, George Sneddon, at Dalziel on 17 July 1858 and signed his name.

The 1861 census for Dalziel parish recorded Terence Feely as head of a household living at Glenhead that comprised himself, his wife Helen, his son Hugh, and his two daughters, Bridget and Rose. Terence was noted as 31 years of age and born in Ireland. He worked as a coal miner.

There is an entry in the 1870 US Census for Jamaica in the county of Queens, New York State, that recorded a Terrence Feeley as head of a household that included himself, Mary Feeley his wife or partner, and two young daughters Rose and Margret. Terrence was aged 39 years and worked as a farm labourer. He was born in Ireland. Mary Feeley was 33 years of age, born in Ireland, and kept house. She could not read or write. Rose was 7 years of age and had been born in New York State, as had Margret aged 5 years. Both attended school.

This entry is sufficiently linked in data to be considered as this Terence Feely, but also sufficiently at odds to cast serious doubt. The ages of the two girls are a sticking point, but if Mary was a replacement for Helen Keenan, and could not read or write, it is conceivable that she did not communicate the ages of the two girls very accurately. Similarly their places of birth.

The 1880 US Census also recorded a Terrance Feeley, aged 49 years and born in Ireland, living with his two daughters Rosa and Maggie Feeley living in Jamaica in the county of Queens, New York State. he was a widower and worked as a farm labourer. Both of the girls were recorded as born in New York. Rosa was aged 18 years and kept house. Maggie Feeley was aged 16 years and attended school.

This entry only extends the dilemma posed by the 1870 US Census entry: they may or may not be the family in question. Against it being the same family is the fact that Helen Keenan outlived her husband. In favour of it being the same group is the fact that when her daughter Rose married in 1889 in Motherwell, Rose Feely's age was recorded as 28 years, making her perceived year of birth to be 1860-1861, nearer that of the American entries.

In 1889 Rose Feely married. In her marriage certificate Terence Feely, her father, was recorded as a coalminer.

In his death certificate of 1893, Terence was described as a 'pauper formerly a coalminer married to Helen Keenan'. He was recorded as 'about 63 years old'. Both of his parents were deceased. 5 6 7 8 9 10

  Research Notes:

GLENHEAD

Glenhead is in the Craigneuk area of Dalziel or Motherwell parish, which in modern registration terms would be considered more to be Wishaw.

  Medical Notes:

William Livingstone MB ChM certified the cause of death.

James Berry, Terence's son in law who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his death before Thomas Steele, registrar, at Wishaw on 25 September 1893.

Terence married Mrs FEELY MS UNKNOWN in 1847 in County Leitrim, Ireland.1 (Mrs FEELY MS UNKNOWN was born about 1827 and died before 16 May 1855.)

Terence next married Helen KEENAN, daughter of James KEENAN and Rose McMANUS, on 16 May 1855 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.2 3 (Helen KEENAN was born on 2 May 1825 in County Fermanagh, Ireland and died 8 March 1894 at 8.30 am in 52 Berryhill Rows, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11.). The cause of her death was old age and weakness over 2 months.

  Marriage Notes:

Terence Feely, resident at Carfin, was a widower aged 29 years. This was his second marriage. He had been born, but not registered, in Glanif, County Leitrim, Ireland on 24 June 1827. Both his parents were still alive.

Helen Kinen was an unmarried woman of 30 years of age. She too was resident at Carfin. She was born but not registered in County Fermanagh, Ireland on 2 May 1825. Her parents were still living.

Patrick O'Leary RCC celebrated the marriage. The witnesses were James Keanin and Agnes Mc(unclear) who made her X mark.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 25 May 1855, William Dickson being the signing registrar. 3
