  General Notes:

In 1840 at St Margaret's Airdrie a 'John Vallaley' was sponsor at the baptism of Mary Hughes, lawful daughter of Michael Hughes and Jane Monaghan. This man is a possible for that, by virtue of his age, and by the fact that his mother was a Hughes by birth and he might have been a cousin of the child's father. However it is not know in if he was in New Monkland parish as early as this, though he was in this part of Scotland about 10-15 years later.

On 23 January 1842 a 'John Vallaley' was sponsor at the baptism of Edward McLaughlin, lawful son of James McLaughlin and Agnes O'Neal, at St Margaret's RC Chapel in Airdrie. Edward was born on 9 January 1842. Fr John O'Ryan baptised the child and the second sponsor was Mary Monaghan.

His son Charles's death certificate of 1855 recorded him as an ironstone miner.

In 1855 a witness at the first marriage of Charles McKendry was listed as 'John Wallely (sic)'. It in all probability this John Vallely, his brother in law.

The 1861 census recorded John Vallely, his wife and four children living at house no 8 Shotts parish in Lanarkshire. John was an ironstone miner and head of the household. He had been born in Ireland and was recorded as 42 years of age.

John appears to have made the journey from Ireland to Scotland and then to the USA. 1 4 5 6 7
