William was recorded by the 1851 census for New Monkland living in Airdrie with two older brothers, Patrick and Francis, and two lodgers. He was aged 15 years and a collier.
The 1861 census for Hamilton recorded a William Feely boarding with the Tiffaney family in Low Waters parish Hamilton. He was born in Ireland and his age was recorded as 21 years. No employment was given.
William was the informant of the death of his brother Patrick at Strathaven in 1866. He made his X mark.
"William Feehly" (sic) was the informant of the birth of his daughter Mary in 1867. he was recorded then as a coal miner, and made his X mark before the registrar at Strathaven on 20 February 1867.
The 1871 census for Hamilton recorded a Feeley family living at the Toll House, a house that had one windowed room, sheltering three adults and two children. The head of the house, William Feeley, was an Irish born ironstone miner aged 33 years. Living with him were his wife Ellen, his brother Thomas, and his children Mary and Ellen. 3 4 5 6
William married Helen McGOVERN, daughter of Hugh McGOVERN and Bridget McINIFF, on 16 February 1863 in Kirkyard St, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Helen McGOVERN was born about 1839 in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland.)

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church by Edmund Sheedy, RC Clergyman. The witnesses werer Hugh Doyle and Agnes Stapleton.
William Feely, who made his X mark, was a bachelor of 24 years, and lived in Kirkyard Street, Strathaven. He was an ironstone miner.
Ellen McGovern also made her X mark. She was a domestic servant aged 24 years and lived in Kirkyard Street too. Her mother was deceased.
The marriage was registered at Strathaven on 17 February 1863, Andrew Cameron being the signing registrar. 2
