General Notes:
1841 Census: A young woman called Susan Harries, aged about 15 years, was recorded living in the household of a labourer and his wife called Blair and Margret Love in Main Street, Gorbals, Lanarkshire. Like the Loves she was Irish born. There is no other firm connecting information to link this young woman to the wife of Hugh McCormick. However circumstantially the odds are good that this was Susan. 1 she was in the south side of the Clyde, where Hugh McCormick was known to live. A family of Harrises lived in Old Wynd at number 94 when Charles McCormick and family were living at number 60. 2 both the name Susan and the name Harris or Harries, and their combination, were uncommon at this period in Glasgow. There are no 'Susan Harris' entries in the 1841 census for Glasgow and only one 'Susan Harries'. 3 this Susan was born in Ireland; the name Harris was more common among English or Welsh born people.
One obstacle in identifying her firmly as Susan, later McCormick, is to be found in the ages attributed to her in the 1841 census entry and in her death certificate: 15 years in 1841, 28 years twenty years later. However, the 1851 census recorded her as 24 years of age, and the 1861 census, taken in the same year Susan died, notes her age as 34 years - very close to the age recorded in 1841. It appears to be the age at death that is inaccurate. If so, we can identify the 1841 'Susan Harries' as this person. _____________________________________________________________
In her death certificate of 1861 Susan McCormick was recorded as 'married to Hugh McCormick Harbour Labourer'. She was also recorded as being 28 years old. Both of her parents were deceased. _____________________________________________________________ 3
Medical Notes:
The cause of death was certified by William A. Liddell, surgeon.
The informant was Elizabeth Anderson, sister of the deceased woman, of 22 New Street Calton. She gave notice before the registrar at Glasgow on 18 May 1861 and made her X mark. 3
Susan married Hugh McCORMICK, son of Charles McCORMICK and Ann McCANN. (Hugh McCORMICK was born about 1824 in Ireland 2 and died 28 February 1868 at 8.00 am in Glasgow Harbour, Glasgow, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was drowning.3
Marriage Notes:
Elizabeth Anderson, Elizabeth's aunt, who had been present where the child's birth occurred, gave notice of Elizabeth McCormick's birth before the registrar at Glasgow on 18 May 1861, and made her X mark. She also gave information about the marriage of Elizabeth's parents as 13 March 1853 Glasgow, though this has not been confirmed by other means.
The 1851 recorded Hugh, Susan, Charles and John living as a family unit with Susan's parents. This suggests that wherever and whenever the marriage took place before that, the couple did marry. The informant Elizabeth Anderson appears to have been somewhat inaccurate in reporting Susan's age at death. It is possible she was asked for the date and place of the couple's marriage when she was reporting a birth, she gave a date off the top of her head to satisfy the registrar. 7
