   Other names for Mary were CAMERON, Mary,⁴ HARRIES, Mary ² and HARRIS, Mary.⁴

  General Notes:

Mary Harris, 'Wife of a Labourer', died in the afternoon of April 19 1858. Her recorded age at death was 71 years. Her parents were both dead, and her son, Charles, who was the informant of her death, was able to provide the registrar with the name of only Mary's father, John Campbell.

Note: the 1851 census, only five years before, had recorded Mary as 50 years of age, and her husband as 78 years old. Her first child we know of was born about 1827, the last we know of about 1838. If Mary had been 71 years old at death it would mean she had her first child when she was about 40 years old, not impossible of course, but three children followed within ten or eleven years. This last part is a less likely scenario. Therefore, it is likely that Mary's age was somewhere between 57 years old and 71 years old when she died. If her son did not know his grandmother's name, it may be that he was also guessing his mother's age.

Mary's surname was noted as Campbell in her daughter Mary's marriage certificate of 1862. ³

NEW STREET CALTON GLASGOW

New Street appears to be now Stevenson Street, lying between London Road and the Gallowgate, moving west from Abercromby Street and running at right angles to Green Street and Tobago Street. In the eighteenth century New Street stretched across Main Street to where The Barras now stand. The old Calton Cross stood at the junction between New Street and Main Street. The Calton itself was a weavers' village. It became a Burgh in 1817 and was absorbed into Glasgow in 1846. ⁵

James Donald, surgeon, who saw Mary Harris on 17 April 1858, certified the cause of death.

Mary's son, Charles, of 47 Dale Street, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar at Glasgow on 20 April 1858 and made his X mark.

James Lynch, undertaker, certified that Mary's remains were buried in Dalbeth Cemetery Glasgow. ³

Mary married Edward HARRIS, son of Mr HARRIS and Mary HARRIS MS UNKNOWN. (Edward HARRIS was born about 1773 in Ireland,² died 25 February 1860 at 1.00 pm in 32 New Street, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland ³ and was buried in Dalbeth Cemetery Glasgow, Scotland ³.). The cause of his death was old age.³
