The 1881 census for Cleland recorded Alice Kavanagh living with her family in Omoa Square. She was 11 years old and had been born in Ireland. She was a scholar. 4


Alice married James COLLINS Quarryman, son of James COLLINS Stone Quarryman and Rose McILROY, on 6 June 1889 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (James COLLINS Quarryman was born about 1867 in Chapelhall, Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 5.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was John Hughes and the witnesses were James McGranahan and Ellen Duggan.

James Collins was a bachelor who was a quarryman by occupation. he was 21 years of age and resided in Cleland, Shotts parish. Both of his parents were recorded as deceased in his marriage certificate.

Alice Cavanagh, of Omoa Square in Shotts parish, was 19 years old, a spinster and domestic servant.

The marriage was registered at Cleland on 9 June 1889.


Note: It's not clear why the parents of James Collins were recorded as deceased in this marriage certificate. It may have been an error on the part of the either the priest or the registrar clerk, or there may have been some other reason.
