The 1871 census for Cambusnethan recorded James and Rose Collins living there with their daughter Ann, and their two sons, James and Patrick. James was recorded as 29 years old and was a quarryman by occupation.

James Collins, son of the deceased and who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death at Cleland on 25 October 1889.

In the census of 1891, James Collins, a freestone quarrier, was living at 68 Omoa Square in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire, with his wife Alice Collins and his brothers Patrick and Joseph Collins. He was recorded as having been born in Chapelhall and as aged 24 years.

James Collins, quarryman, who was present in the dwelling where the birth occurred, was the informant of the birth of his daughter Theresa in 1893.

In 1896, James Collins, a quarryman, was the informant of the birth of his daughter Rose. He signed when registering the birth. The date he provided for his marriage was one year out, 1890 June 6th West District of Shotts! 3 4 5


James married Alice CAVANAGH, daughter of John CAVANAGH and Theresa HUGHES, on 6 June 1889 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Alice CAVANAGH was born on 11 March 1869 in County Tyrone, Ireland.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was John Hughes and the witnesses were James McGranahan and Ellen Duggan.

James Collins was a bachelor who was a quarryman by occupation. he was 21 years of age and resided in Cleland, Shotts parish. Both of his parents were recorded as deceased in his marriage certificate.

Alice Cavanagh, of Omoa Square in Shotts parish, was 19 years old, a spinster and domestic servant.

The marriage was registered at Cleland on 9 June 1889.


Note: It's not clear why the parents of James Collins were recorded as deceased in this marriage certificate. It may have been an error on the part of the either the priest or the registrar clerk, or there may have been some other reason.
