  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Glasgow recorded Charles Tweedlie, his wife Jane, and five children living at Claybraes. A lodger aged 78 years and named John Gunn also was listed. Charles was recorded as 45 years and his wife as three years older. He had been born in Ireland worked as a scavenger. The surname of the family is indexed as as Tweidie in the GRO index.

Charles was a labourer according to his son Charles' wedding lines in 1859 and according to his son David's wedding certificate in 1863.

Charles died in 1877, and in his death certificate his age was recorded as 58 years and his occupation as 'sanitary labourer'. He was survived by his wife Jane Mason. Given the ages of his children, it is difficult to accept the age proposed for Charles, which would mean a birth year of 1819 or so. He may have been about 10 years earlier than this.

When his son Henry died in 1878, Charles himself was also dead. He was recorded then as having been a 'sanitary-labourer'.

In 1879 Charles' wife, Jane, applied for parish relief. She stated that she was a widow, and she gave her husband's age as 71 years. It is not clear what she meant by that: the age at which he died, or the age he would have been had he lived. His occupation was noted as'scavenger'.

Charles' son, William, died in 1880. In his death certificate his father, Charles, was recorded as a 'labourer deceased'. 2 3

  Medical Notes:

A.F. MacKay, Surgeon, certified the cause of Charles's death.

Charles's son, William Tweedlie notified the registrar James McLaren on 16 July 1877 at Glasgow of his father's death.

William gave his own address as 28 Hill Street Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland.

Charles married Jane MASON, daughter of William MASON and Elizabeth DOUGALL. (Jane MASON was born about 1803 in Magherafelt, County Derry, Ireland 2 3 and died after 28 November 1881.)
