The 1891 census for Richmond Place in Edinburgh recorded James Winton living with his family. He was recorded as 23 years of age and born in the St Giles district of Edinburgh. He worked as a tailor.

When James Winton senior died during the Great War, James Winton, his son, who was present where his father's death occurred, gave notice of the death before the registrar, W. Cowan Telfer, at Edinburgh on 28 March 1916. ^{4 5}
