FRASER DAUGHTER
James Fraser in his Chronicles does not mention a daughter of the 4th laird of Lovat called Eufame or Euphemia. He does mention Eufem, daughter of the Earle of Rosse, and this may have confused matters. This is the passage:
"The Lord Lovats daughters were 1. Sicilia, who married Alexander Innes of Innes and Invermarky, 2. Mary was matcht with Andrew, brother to the Earle of Rosse, and S. Isabel was married to James Hay, brother of Arrall. Lord Hugh being called by the Earle of Rosse, his uncle, to convoy Eufem his daughter (ie the daughter of the Earl of Ross who married King Robert II as his second wife) south to be married to the King, went with other nobles in that retenue, and returned cloathed with a commission of Lieutenant of the North, the first of that nature that perhaps was bestowed upon any subject ..."
Moreover Ane Account of the Familie of Innes, compiled by Duncan Forbes of Culloden, highlights the lack of proof for the marriage, except for family tradition, not to mention the confusion about the order of the Frasers of Lovat.
"Sir Walter was married to Euphame of Fraser, daughter to Hugh of Fraser who was first Lord Lovat, which woman had been formerly wife to the Captain of Clanchattane or Laird of M'Intosh. There is nothing to prove this, but the assertion of both these families, who keep then freindship yet upon that pretence, as being both the children of the same mother."
Secondary sources seem agreed that the Fraser match was with Walter Innes, whereas Chronicles attaches her to Alexander Innes, his father. In terms of dates, that does not seem impossible. It is one example of the many areas of confusion or ambiguity that characterise early Innes genealogy.
Euphemia married Lachlan MACINTOSH 8th of that Ilk, son of William MACINTOSH 7th of that Ilk and Unknown.1 (Lachlan MACINTOSH 8th of that Ilk was born about 1350 and died in 1407 1.)
Marriage Notes:
"Euphemia, called also Agnes, married to Lachlan Macintosh, the Captain of Clanchattan. After his death in 1407 she married Sir Walter Innes of that Ilk, and had issue."
from Scots Peerage 1
Euphemia next married Sir Walter INNES 10th of that Ilk, son of Alexander DE INNES 9th of that Ilk and Janet ABERCHIRDER heiress of Aberchirder, in 1408.1 (Sir Walter INNES 10th of that Ilk was born about 1369 and died before 14 July 1456.)
Marriage Notes:
"Euphemia (Fraser), called also Agnes, married to Lachlan Macintosh, the Captain of Clanchattan. After his death in 1407 she married Sir Walter Innes of that Ilk, and had issue."
from Scots Peerage (vol 5) 1
