"JOSEPH BRODIE of Mayne, Elgin [which he purchased in 1648], born about 1600, fourth son of David B. of Brodie; educated at King's College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1620); inst. and adm. to Keith 23rd June 1631; pres. by James, Earl of Moray, before 15th July, trans, and adm. Dec. 1646; was a member of Commissions of Assembly, 1647, 1648; app. in 1649 one of the Visitors of King's College, and in 1654 app. by the Privy Council of England a commissioner for authorising admissions to the ministry in the North. He died 27th Oct. 1656. He marr. Nicola (died Oct. 1665), daugh. of John Guthrie, Bishop of Moray, and had issue Alexander of Mayne, died 1695. [Brodie's Diary]"

"1648, October 31. sasine on charter of alienation by Robert Gordoun of Mayne to Mr Joseph Brodie, minister at the kirk of Forres, his heirs male and assignees whatsoever, heritably and irredeemably, of the lands of Mayne and Aikenhead, with pertinents, lying in the Earldom of Moray, and shire of Elgin and Forres. The charter, written by Alexander Hay, burgess of Elgin, is dated at Elgin, 23rd February, 1648. Witnesses- Mr John Hay, Commissary of Moray ; Nicol Dunbar, burgess of Elgin; David Dunbar in Garmoche ; and said Alexander Hay. Sasine given on 27th October, 1648. Witnesses Alexander Brodie of that Ilk; Francis Brodie, his servitor; John Brodie, servitor to Alexander Brodie of Lethin (who is bailie); David Dunbar in Aikinhead; and James Russell in Mayne (ibid. iii. col. 435) (Elgin Sasines, vol. iii., folio 435)."

Joseph married Nicola GUTHRIE, daughter of Right Reverend John GUTHRIE of that Ilk, Bishop of Moray and Unknown.1 (Nicola GUTHRIE was born about 1610 and died in October 1665 1.)
