DE SETON, Barbara 1

  • Born: About 1250
  • Marriage (1): DE KEITH, William Great Marischal of Scotland, Sir 1

   User ID: W642.

Barbara married Sir William DE KEITH Great Marischal of Scotland, son of Sir John DE KEITH Great Marischal of Scotland and Margaret COMYN.1 (Sir William DE KEITH Great Marischal of Scotland was born about 1246 and died before 1293 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"In Douglas's Peerage, second edition, ii. 186, it is stated that Barbara, daughter of Serlo or Secher de Seton, was married to Sir William (or Robert) de Keith, who died before 1290. In the first edition (1764), the lady is said to have been daughter of Adam, Lord (of) Seton, ancestor of the Earl of Winton, a MS. history of the family of Keith being cited as authority (cf.supra, vol. vi. 30); but this history seems to have been merely a transcript of ' A Short Relation of the Origin of the Keiths in Scotland,' Aberdeen, 1700 (Family papers of Sir P. Keith Murray of Ochtertyre). The marriage is also mentioned by Chalmers (Caledonia, i. 519) ; but there seems to be no early authority for it, or for the lady's existence. Master Adam de Seton had a charter from Roger de Quincy, Earl of Winchester and Constable of Scotland, apparently in 1246 (Harl. Mss. 4693 fol. 136) ; but he appears to have been a churchman." (pages 562 and 563 footnote 10)

from Scots Peerage (vol 8)

Note: There was a knight named Sir Adam Seton, who is recorded to have lived at least between 1211 and 1242, and probably earlier than 1211, in the last half or quarter of the twelfth century. He witnessed legal documents in the Annandale area, eg a Quitclaim of William de Brus between 1194 and 1211. So he is probably a little early to be the father of Barbara.

As far Adam the chaplain, he could well have been Barbara's father. We know little of his biography. Barbara, though his child, may have, for many reasons, been brought up by Saer.
