"ARCHIBALD, sixth Earl of Angus, eldest son of the Master, succeeded his grandfather, the fifth Earl, about December 1513. He was retoured heir to his father in Douglasdale and other lands on 29 November 1513, and to his grandfather in the barony of Bothwell in January 1513-14. He was then about twenty-five, having been born in or about 1489."

Archibald married Margaret HEPBURN, daughter of Sir Patrick HEPBURN of Dunsyre, 2nd Lord Hailes, 1st Earl of Bothwell and Margaret GORDON, 26 June 1509(contract).1 (Margaret HEPBURN was born about 1493 and died in 1513 2.)

"The sixth Earl was three times married. First, to Margaret Hepburn, daughter of Patrick, first Earl of Bothwell, by whom he had no surviving issue, and she died
in 1513."

"Margaret Hepburne, who was married, contract dated 26 June 1509, to Archibald Douglas (son of George, Master of Angus), who afterwards succeeded as sixth Earl of Angus. The contract of marriage is preserved in the Buccleuch charter-chest. John, Prior of St. Andrews, George, Abbot of Aberbrothok, Adam Hepburne of the Craggis, and Mr. George Hepburne, Dean of Dunkeld, were parties on behalf of Adam, Earl of Bothwell, brother of the bride. She died in 1513, it is said, in childbed, leaving no surviving issue."

Archibald next married Margaret TUDOR, daughter of Henry VII TUDOR King of England and Elizabeth Princess of York, Queen Consort, in August 1514 in Kinnoull, Perhshire, Scotland.2 The marriage ended in divorced march 1526. (Margaret TUDOR was born on 29 November 1489 in London, England,6 died on 18 October 1541 in Methven, Perthshire, Scotland 6 and was buried in 1541 in Carthusian monastery, Perth, Scotland 2.)

"Queen Margaret Tudor was married secondly, at the Chapel of Kinnoull in August 1514, to Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, by whom she had a daughter. She obtained a divorce from him in March 1526, on the ground of an alleged pre-contract" (page 21)

"Soon after his accession to the earldom he (Archibald Douglas) married Margaret Tudor, widow of King James IV., a union infelicitous to the parties chiefly concerned, and also for a time to Scotland, as Angus and his wife became the centre of a series of intrigues for possession of the young princes, and for the government of Scotland." (page 190)

"His second wife was Queen Margaret Tudor, who divorced him, the final sentence being pronounced on 11 March 1528." (page 192)

Archibald had a relationship with Daughter STEWART, daughter of James STEWART of Traquair and Catherine RUTHERFORD co-heiress of Rutherford and Wells, Roxburghshire. (Daughter STEWART was born about 1506.)

"He (Patrick Ruthven) married, first, before 8 August 1546, Janet Douglas, natural daughter of Archibald, Earl of Angus, by a daughter of Stewart of Traquair, to whom he was contracted before his marriage to Margaret Tudor, the Queen-Dowager..."

Archibald next married Margaret MAXWELL, daughter of Robert MAXWELL 5th Lord Maxwell and Janet DOUGLAS, before 9 April 1543.3 (Margaret MAXWELL was born about 1530 and died in 1593 1 2.)


  Marriage Notes:

"His (Archibald Douglas's) third wife was Margaret Maxwell, daughter of Robert, Lord Maxwell, who survived him."

"By his third wife the Earl had a son James, Master of Angus, who died in February 1548, while still in infancy. Other children by the same wife also died young, and their names are not known."
