  General Notes:

Patrick Gordon 2nd Laird of Letterfourie and George Gordon, 6th Earl and 1st Marquess of Huntly, were both descended from the 2nd Earl of Huntly so they were 'family'. In 1592 Patrick was among the kinsmen who went with the 1st Marquess to Donibristle in Fife, Scotland. They went there to carry out a plot to murder James Stewart, Earl of Moray. Moray, living at his mother's house, expected to have a meeting with Huntly and was not well protected. Huntly's men set fire to the house and killed Moray. Huntly was arrested then pardoned, perhaps, some said, because King James VI had wanted Moray killed.

"1591-92, 22nd March — The following persons are denounced as rebels at a meeting of the Council, but (as pointed out in a note to the published edition of the Records), only for form's sake, and as a legal sequence to a charge previously made, in connection with the slaughter of the Earl of Murray at Donibristle,
