"This branch, the most ancient cadet of the house of Hamilton, was, for several centimes, designated indifferently from its two principal estates, the barony of Preston in East Lothian, and the barony of Fingalton in the co. of Renfrew ; while the lands of Ross or Rossaven, in the shire of Lanark, afforded an occasional title to the heir-apparent of the family."

John married Jane LYDDELL heiress of Preston. (Jane LYDDELL heiress of Preston was born about 1355.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Sir John Hamilton of Fingalton, second son of David Fitz Walter (No. 3). There is a precept of sasine by John of Hamilton, Lord of Cadzow, to his uncle, Sir John of Hamilton, Lord of Fingalton, 21st May 1395 {Hamilton MSS.). He was present, and was probably killed, at the battle of Homildon, 14th September 1402. He is said to have married, first, Jane, daughter and heiress of Sir James Lyddell of Preston ; and, second, Anna, daughter of Sir William Seton of that Ilk. He had two sons : -

(a) Sir James (No. 514).

(b) John Hamilton, founder of the family of Ellershaw, now extinct."

John next married Anna SETON, daughter of Sir William SETON 1st of that Ilk and First WIFE. (Anna SETON was born about 1380.)

  Marriage Notes:
