General Notes: On 21 December 1553, James, Lord Fleming, confirmed a charter by which James, Duke of Chatelherault, Earl of Arran, sold to his eldest daughter, Barbara Hamilton, the liferent of Easter and Wester Gartshore and others.(gartshorefamilyhistory.co.uk) Barbara married Alexander GORDON Lord Gordon, son of George GORDON 4th Earl of Huntly, Lord Chancellor and Elizabeth KEITH. (Alexander GORDON Lord Gordon was born about 1531 and died after 18 September 1552 4.) Marriage Notes: "Barbara (Hamilton), the eldest daughter, was first contracted to Alexander, Lord Gordon, eldest son and heir of George, fourth Earl of Huntly, but it is not certain that the marriage took place, as he died before 18 June 1553, shortly after their betrothal, although in one writ they are said to have been married, and in another she is styled his relict, and she, in December 1553, renounced all her rights over his lands. She was married (contract dated 22 December 1553) to James, Lord Fleming, Chamberlain of Scotland." (page 370) Barbara next married James FLEMING 4th Lord Fleming, Lord Chamberlain, son of Malcolm FLEMING 3rd Lord Fleming, Lord Chamberlain of Scotland and Janet STEWART 'La Belle Ecossaise', 22 December 1553(contract).1 (James FLEMING 4th Lord Fleming, Lord Chamberlain was born about 1527 and died on 15 December 1558 1.) Marriage Notes: He (James Fleming) married (contract 22 December 1553) Barbara Hamilton, eldest daughter of James, Earl of Arran, Duke of Cliatelherault, Governor of Scotland, and relict of Alexander, Lord Gordon. She had a charter from her husband of part of the barony of Lenzie 14 December 1553. They had an only child : - Jane" |
