User ID: Z516. Noted events in his life were: 1. Provost, 1525, of Aberdeen. 2 2. Provost, 1533-1534, of Aberdeen. 2 3. Provost, 1537-1544, of Aberdeen. 2 4. Provost, 1547-1575, of Aberdeen. 2 Thomas married Marion REID heiress of Pitfoddels, daughter of Alexander REID of Pitfodels. Provost of Aberdeen and Mariote CULLEN, on 12 January 1520.1 2 (Marion REID heiress of Pitfoddels was born about 1499 and died on 20 September 1551 1 2.) Marriage Notes: "It was not until the families became united by marriage that the two portions were joined. This happened on 12th January, 1520-1, when Thomas, the eldest son of Provost Gilbert, married Marion, the only daughter of the deceased Alexander Reid of Eastertown and Westertown. Thus the whole of Pitfodels passed into the Menzies family, and gave them their designation for the next three centuries." Thomas next married Elizabeth FORBES of Rires, 'Lady Towie', daughter of Sir George FORBES 3rd of Rires and Margaret LUNDY.2 (Elizabeth FORBES of Rires, 'Lady Towie' was born about 1535 and died on 22 January 1584 2.) Marriage Notes: "The Chronicle of Aberdeen, under date 20th September, 1551, records that, after a wedded life of twenty-nine years, 'Marione Reid, spouse to Thomas Menzies, prouest of Aberdeen, departitt' this life. From the same source we learn that Menzies took for his second wife Elizabeth Forbes, by whom he was survived. Provost Menzies died in December, 1576, while the following entry records the death of his second wife - 'Elisabetht Forbes, Lady Towe, and spouse to Thomas Menzies of Pitfoddellis, and prouest of Aberdeen, departtit the xxij. day Januar,1584-[85]yeris.' " |
