Research Notes:
JOHN STRACHAN'S WIFE
MacFarlane's Genealogical Collections states that the wife of this John Strachan was "Margaret Erskine daughter to John Erskine of Dun by Dame Margaret Ruthven Countes Dowager of Buchan." Material pertaining to the Strachans of Thornton from this source is printed as an Appendix in Memorials of the Families of Strachan and Wise. Some, though not all, of the material contained therein is erroneous.
As well as mentioning Margaret Erskine, the Appendix goes on to refer to a marriage between John Strachan and a daughter of "Livingstone of Dun". In footnote 6, however, on page 109, linking toe the supposed Margaret Erskine marriage, a Birth Brief is referred to. In Latin, a John Strachan is noted there as having married "Margarete Liston", and the author of the Appendix material comments thereafter in the footnote:
"... She seems to be only a second wife. But 'tis possible that by the error of the transcriber it may be Liston instead of Erskine."
In the "Pedigree Chart of Livingstone of Dunipace", Margaret, daughter of Alexander Livingstone and Elizabeth hepburn is shown as the wife of John Strachan of Thornton, and that arrangement is what is used on this site, on the assumption, as expelained ablove, that the "Liston" was in fact mistranscribed as "Erskine". 1 3 4
Margaret married Sir John STRACHAN of Thornton, son of Sir Alexander STRACHAN of Thornton and Isabel FALCONER.1 2 (Sir John STRACHAN of Thornton was born about 1514 and died 20th August 1587 in Aberdeen, Scotland.)
