"The Earl (Alexander Stewart) had no family by either of his wives, but he had a natural son Thomas, and he obtained from King James I., on 28 May 1426, a charter granting the earldom of Mar and the lordship of the Garioch to himself and his son with reversion to the King and his heirs. The King also in the following January granted or continued to him the lordship of Badenoch for life. He died in 1435, without lawful issue, his son Thomas, who had married Elizabeth Douglas, widow of John Stewart, Earl of Buchan .... without issue, having predeceased him."

"Earl William died sometime between the date of the charter and 29 March 1482. He was three times married; first, to Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas, by Lady Margaret Stewart, daughter of King Robert III. She was already the widow of John, Earl of Buchan, Constable of France, and of Sir Thomas Stewart, son of Alexander, Earl of Mar."

"Elizabeth (Douglas), married .... thirdly, to William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney and Caithness, who survived her. She is said to have founded the crypt at the east end of Roslin Chapel. Over the door of the crypt is, or was, the inscription 'Forte est vinum, fortior est Rex, fortiores sunt mulieres, super omnia vincit veritas.' The Countess died about 1451."

"William Sinclair of Newburgh, commonly known as 'The Waster,' was the eldest son of the said William, Earl of Caithness, by his first marriage with Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas. He was disinherited by his father, who, on 7 December 1476, resigned his lands of the earldom of Caithness in the hands of the King, from whom he obtained a new grant with remainder to William, the eldest son of his second marriage."
