Janet married Alexander GORDON Master of Sutherland, son of Adam GORDON Lord of Aboyne, Earl of Sutherland, jure uxoris and Elizabeth SUTHERLAND 10th Countess of Sutherland, in June 1520.1 (Alexander GORDON Master of Sutherland was born about 1501 1 and died on 15 January 1529 in Dunrobin, Sutherland, Scotland 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"On 4 March 1527-28 he and his wife had a Crown charter of the lands of Navidale,
in the parish of Kildonan, and of Garty, Lothmore, and others, in the parish of Loth."

"He married Janet Stewart, eldest daughter of John Stewart, second Earl of Atholl, and Janet Campbell, his wife. (See title Atholl.) The marriage probably took place about 16 June 1520, though Sir Robert Gordon refers it to the year 1518. The Mistress of Sutherland survived the Master, and married, secondly. Sir Hew Kennedy of Girvanmains before May 1532; thirdly, before November 1544, Henry, Lord Methven ; and, fourthly, about 1557, Patrick, Lord Ruthven, having issue to each husband. According to Sir Robert Gordon, her fifth husband was James Gray, son to Lord Gray of Poulis, without issue."

Janet next married Sir Hew KENNEDY of Girvanmains, son of Alexander KENNEDY of Girvanmains and Unknown, before May 1532.1 The marriage ended in divorce. (Sir Hew KENNEDY of Girvanmains was born about 1500 and died after 1565 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"His (Henry Stewart's) first proved marriage, however, was to the Queen-Dowager. On her death he married the mother of his four children, Janet Stewart, who, as his wife, received with him, June 1545, the third part of the lands of Nether Gorthie. She was daughter of John, second Earl of Atholl, and widow, first of Alexander, Master of Sutherland, and secondly, of Sir Hugh Kennedy of Girvanmains. She survived him, liferenting the lordship of Methven, and married, fourthly (contract 9 April 1557), Patrick, Lord Ruthven. This is her last proved marriage, but it is alleged that she was married, fifthly, to James Gray, son of Gilbert Gray of Foulis."
