Betsy's birth certificate of 1872 recorded her as illegitimate. Only her mother's name was recorded as parent, and her mother, Helen Shand, was the informant of the birth at Alford, before Hugh McConnach, registrar, on 28 May 1872.

In 1881 Betsy Gall was living with her mother, Helen, and her grandmother, Christina, at 8 Village Road in Alford Aberdeenshire. Betsy was 8 years of age and had been born in Alford. ^{1 2}
