PLACEMENT

This is a speculative placing of James Fraser of Balchraggan. No James Fraser is mentioned in History of the Frasers of Lovat.

It is clear, however, that the name James is carried through the family from James Fraser of Foyness, through his brother William, to James Fraser in Belladrum, the second son of William Fraser, I. of Guisachan, whose family inherited land from James Fraser of Foyness. The lands of Fraser of Foyness, having only a daughter, appear to have being reallocated in conformity with the male-entail.

It is not improbable then that Hugh the son of James Fraser in Belladrum, had anothe son, named James. There seems to be no other information about who this James Fraser of Balchraggan was, and the timeline fits, as does the designation, so near to belladrum. He may have been born outside of marriage.

BALCHRAGGAN

Balchraggan (Inverness IV3 8LD) is a small settlement situated on the western bank of Loch Ness, about seven miles north of Drumnadrochit and about seven miles south-east of Belladrum. 2

James married.
