The Stewarts of Ballechin are descended from Sir John Stewart, natural son of King James I., who obtained the lands of Stix, near Dunkeld, from Patrick Cardney, of Stixs, on 11 December, 1486, and in which he is styled as brother natural to King James II. He m. to Muriel Sutherland, (she was widow of Thomas Oliphant, of Dron, who had d. in 1484, and d. at Ballechin and was buried at Dunkeld on 4 September, 1510), d. on 11 September, 1523, and was father of .... 1 William Stewart, 2nd of Stix .... 2 John Stewart, 3rd of Stix .... 2 James Stewart, d. at Edinburgh in 1508, 4 Patrick Stewart, 4th of Sticks "
