HEPBURN, Adam of Hailes 2

  • Born: About 1295
  • Marriage (1): FOURBOUR, Marion 1
  • Died: Before 22 February 1371 2

   User ID: H548.

  General Notes:

"The name of Hepburn is probably a local one derived from lands in Northumberland. The house of Hailes is traditionally reported to have been founded by an Englishman taken prisoner in the reign of King David II., and long detained for non-payment of ransom, who, having on one occasion rescued the Earl of Dunbar and March from a savage horse, was rewarded by the grant of lands in East Lothian."

from Scots Peerage (vol 2) 2

Adam married Marion FOURBOUR.1 (Marion FOURBOUR was born about 1305.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Adam Hepburn had [with Marion Fourbuire or Fourbour, his spouse] in the reign of David II. a charter of the lands of Trepren (Traprain) and Southall, of Mersingtoun, and some in Colbrandspath, to be held of the Earl of March ; and of the lands of Southalls and Northalls (now called Hailes), at the Earl's disposition on the forfeiture of Hew Gourlay of Beinstoun ; with the lands of Rollanstoun, Berwickshire. [This charter was confirmed by David II. about 1343 (Reg. Mag. Sig,, vol. i., new ed., App. i. No. 117).] He died before the end of the reign, leaving two sons : 1. Patrick (afterwards Sir Patrick) Hepburne, Lord of Hailes, his successor. 2. John."
