"Sir William Wardlaw of Wilton had a charter, 1398-1405, from King Robert III. of the lands of Uchterseatmylne, Sameton and Todshaw in the barony of Wilton and shire of Roxburgh. He appears to have married Margaret de Wardlaw, and to have died before I September 1417, on which date there is a commission to grant dispensation for the marriage of Walter Turnbull and Margaret de Wardlaw, widow of Sir William de Wardlaw. In the dispensation she is designed nobilis mulier Margarita de Wardaw, quondam Willelmi de Wardalaw MiIitis relicta vidua."
