  General Notes:

"Sir William Borthwick, the third of Borthwick, had a letter of safe-conduct to pass through England, 9 June 1425, being, with the Bishops of Aberdeen and Dunblane, and seven others, ambassador from Scotland to Rome. He is said to have been knighted at the baptism of Alexander and James, the twin sons of James I., in 1430. In a Crown charter of 4 December 1450 he is described as ' Wilelmus de Borthwic de eodem ' ; he is designed as Lord Borthwick in two Crown charters of 1454, the one dated 21 July and the other 27 October ; and he sat as a Lord of Parliament under the title of LORD BORTHWICK, and sealed, as one of the barons, the instrument of forfeiture against James, ninth and last Earl of Douglas, on 17 June 1455. He must have been raised to the Peerage in the interval between 4 December 1450 and 21 July 1454. According to the Auchinleck Chronicle, a number of lords were ' maid ' in the Parliament which began its sittings at Edinburgh 12 June 1452, including 'The lord borthuik of that Ilk.' "

"In 1459, 1461, 1463, and 1464-65, William Lord Borthwick was engaged in diplomatic relations with England, but as the date of the death of the first Lord is unknown, it is impossible to say whether these missions ought to be assigned to him or to his son."

from Scots Peerage (vol 2) 2

Wlliam married Beatrice SINCLAIR 1 May 1411(papal dispensation).1 (Beatrice SINCLAIR was born about 1392.)

  Marriage Notes:

(Referring to the Borthwick article in The Scots Peerage volume two:

"p. 95, 1. 20, after 'him' add note,

'On 1 May 1411 a dispensation was issued for the marriage of William Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair, but there is no clue as to which William Borthwick is meant (Reg. Aven., 337, f. 170). He had a daughter, Janet Borthwick, for whose marriage to Adam Hepburn, lord of Hailes, a Papal dispensation was granted on 2 November 1411 (Reg. Aven., 339, f. 549)."

from Scots Peerage (vol 9 Addenda et Corrigenda)

Note:

Only the lines underlined by this researcher would seem to apply to this marriage on the grounds of chronology. The Janet Borthwick mentioned would have been a sister of this William Borthwick.
