Eliza Hardie was living at Goosepools in Methlick Parish, Aberdeenshire, when the census for Scotland in 1851 was taken. She was, in that census list, the third youngest of nine children. Eliza was recorded as 5 years old and recorded as born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire.

In the 1861 census for the parish of Methlick, Elizabeth Hardie was the eldest daughter of the children of William and Mary Hardie listed in the entry. Her birthplace was recorded as Methlick, Aberdeenshire, and her age as 14 years.

The 1871 census for Methlick, Aberdeenshire, found William and Mary Hardy and some of their family still living and working at Auchencrieve. With them lived their daughter Eliza, aged 23 years, their son, William, aged 15 years, and their grandson, Charles Mackay, aged 6 years. Eliza Hardy was recorded as a dressmaker who had been born in Methlick.
