In the 1881 census James Barrack was recorded as "Farmer & Miller Farmer Of 49 Acres Arable Employing 1 Man". He was living and working at Mill of Leask in Slains parish Aberdeenshire. In the household there also lived his wife Eliza and their three children, James, William and John. As well as the family there was a male servant George Dickie, a boarder William Finton, and a visitor, Charles Hardy aged 17 years, probably a relative of Eliza.

In the 1891 census for Nigg parish in Kincardineshire James Barrack and his family were living at No 3 Walker Road. James was recorded as a "Flour and Oatmeal Miller":
