User ID: M351. General Notes: "SIR JOHN STEWART of Darnley, eldest son, first Lord Darnley, and first Earl of Lennox of the Stewart line. He granted a charter to his brother Alexander Stewart of the lands of Dreghorn on 13 May 1450, and also a charter of the lands of Galstoun, which was confirmed 27 June 1452. He obtained a grant, under the title of John Stewart, Lord Darnley, from King James III., of the lands of Torboltoun and others, in favour of himself and Margaret Montgomerie, his spouse, 20 July 1461, and his creation as Lord of Parliament was probably made at the coronation of James in. at Kelso in August 1460. He was made Governor of the Castle of Rothesay, 4 February 1465, and was served heir to his grandfather, Sir John Stewart of Darnley in 1466, and on 23 July 1473 was served heir to his greatgrandfather Duncan, Earl of Lennox, in the principal messuage, and the half of the lands of the earldom of Lennox, and of the superiority thereof, and thereupon assumed the title of Earl of Lennox, being so designated in a charter under the Great Seal 6 August 1473...." John married Margaret MONTGOMERIE, daughter of Sir Alexander MONTGOMERIE Lord Montgomerie and Margaret BOYD, 15 May 1438(contract, though underage).1 2 (Margaret MONTGOMERIE was born about 1432.) Marriage Notes: "Margaret, married (contract dated 15 May 1438) to John Stewart, son of Alan Stewart of Darnley. He was afterwards created Lord Darnley and Earl of Lennox." John next married. |
