In 1910 James and Mrs Sarah Ann Sweeney, with their sons Patrick, Daniel, Joseph and John, were recorded in the list of passengers arriving on 9 September, aboard the Suffolk of London, in Sydney, New South Wales, from Melbourne, Australia.

In his file, dated 23 July 1918, in New Zealand World War I Service Records Joseph Sweeney wrote that he had been resident in New Zealand for four years, as had his mother and father; that he was casing scraper by occupation; that he was married, with no children, and lived at 34 Waimairu Road, Riccarton in Christchurch; that his last employer was Islington Freezing Works.
